Some of the most interesting images I’ve seen recently are Alexey Titarekno’s long exposures of commuters flowing in and out of train stations in St Petersburg.
To me, they express the way that the herding behaviour we exhibit when thrust together like this is at once uncomfortable and instinctive. We can relate to the loss of individuality that submitting to the flock brings out in us.
I’ve visualised similar things in my head a hundred times on my daily commute, and often wondered how best to capture it on camera, but I never quite pictured it liked this. There’s something very dark about the faceless throng, hands popping eerily out of the gloom.
