These were all shot with the Nikon D90, which I’ve been giving a good run for it’s money in the last month.  The ISO 1600 mode held up pretty well under these conditions, though having said that I lost a lot of shots because it still wasn’t fast enough to stop motion blur most of the time.

The shot of Chris Kirkland has been edited using a fake tilt-shift technique.  A video tutorial of how to create a fake tilt shift effect is available here.

All these images were taken during a wee road test of the new Nikon D90.  They were shot at 1600 ISO using aperture priority.  From what I’d heard, the high ISO performance on the new Nikon cameras was supposed to be excellent, but I’m really very dissapointed with these images in that respect.  There doesn’t seem to me to be much of an improvement over what I’d expect to see at 1600, namely lots of grain.  Perhaps it’s only the D3 that has the improved high ISO.

These images were taken on my way to work, which takes me from Liverpool Street, across the heart of London’s financial district, through London Bridge and down Southwark.  There’s something I really love about people’s grumpy commuter faces.  Cheer up!

A World Cup qualifier and my second England game in a year. Wembley really is an amazing stadium. There’s something about the acoustics in there that set it apart from any other stadium I’ve been to.

This dark looking building has sprung up on my route to work in the last year or so. I think it’s rather menacing. Which isn’t a bad thing really. It’s representative of the area.

I realised as I was taking this one that I don’t really know anything about architectural photography, and that it’d be interesting to do a bit of digging to try and find out what lenses and processing techniques are best suited to the task.

After some years of political wrangling, the good folks at Gamespot.com’s US headquarters have agreed to allow us UK peeps to start doing video reviews, starting with FIFA 09.

I guess I should explain in case there’s anyone who doesn’t know me that reads this blog :)  I work as a video producer for CBS Interactive, formerly CNET Networks, who own Gamespot.com.  Gamespot.com have an editorial team working in the UK office, just over the way from where I sit, only, until now at least, all the video reviews have been done in the US, for reasons that are largely beyond me.

Doing a star turn in this vid is UK Features Editor Guy Cocker, who I go some way back with now, all the way to the bad old days of the CNET.co.uk launch in 2005, where he and I were founding members of that now bustling consumer gadget reviews site.

Anyway it’s kind of a big deal for us to be working on games reviews now, and it was great to work with Guy again and we’re both pretty happy with the way it’s turned out.  Check it out!

Last week I went down to Berwick Street in Soho and had a wander round the cloth and textile shops that pepper the area to look for something black to shoot products against.  I ended up coming home with a strip of black velvet and I’ve been messing about with it this weekend.  It does the job of swallowing up light beautifully.

I’ve only got one flash at home at the moment - a Canon 580 EX II unit - so the setup on this shot (click on the lighting diagram on the left to enlarge) is really simple, with a circular diffuser softening the light.
